An Enneagram One Learns to Have Fun

Finding joy in the process, not just the checklist

What Is an Enneagram One?

At this point, you’ve likely heard of the Enneagram, a personality framework with nine types. Each type relates to some of the other types in the form of wings and arrows. I’m a Type 1, which The Enneagram Institute describes as “conscientious and ethical, with a strong sense of right and wrong. They are teachers, crusaders, and advocates for change: always striving to improve things, but afraid of making a mistake. Well-organized, orderly, and fastidious, they try to maintain high standards, but can slip into being critical and perfectionistic. They typically have problems with resentment and impatience.”

None of that sounds fun. (Except being well organized. Just me? Ok.)

The good news is that each type has an arrow that points them to growth. For Type 1, that arrow points to Type 7, which The Enneagram Institute calls “The Enthusiast” and describes as “optimistic,” “spontaneous,” and “playful,” noting that “they constantly seek new and exciting experiences. … At their best: they focus their talents on worthwhile goals, becoming appreciative, joyous, and satisfied.”

That actually does sound fun.

Since I am, after all, always striving to improve things, learning to have fun seems like just the growth step I need.

Do you know your Enneagram type? Is the concept of growth arrows new to you? I’d love to hear your type and your path toward growth!
