Weekend Fun Recap: August 8-10

Weekend Fun Recap: August 8-10

I hope you had a fun weekend! Kids in our area are recovering from going back to school. I know other areas of the country don’t go back for weeks. I think I’d like to be team-after-Labor-Day, but it gets so hot here in August we’re all hunkered down in the air conditioning anyway. Might as well learn something! We enjoyed family games this weekend and tried to knock out some to-do list items while the toddler took what he described as “medium” naps. Hopefully he’ll take a couple “extra large” naps this week!

Family Game Night

It was my turn to pick our game, and I went with King of Tokyo. This is a dice-based game in which you try to (I guess) become the King of Tokyo either by gaining victory points the fastest or being the last monster standing. There is some strategy involved, but there also is enough luck to level the playing field for younger players. Gameplay moves quickly, and everyone can be affected on each player’s turn, which helps keep kids engaged. The whole game typically takes less than 30 minutes.

My girls enjoy this game, and there are a couple of “monsters” that are a little more “girly” that they can choose. But I can definitely see this game appealing to boys, and I think it would make a great gift for ages 8 and up!

Visiting GG

We got to pay another visit to my husband’s grandmother, affectionately known as GG, on Saturday. (When told we were going to visit her, my Daniel Tiger–obsessed toddler responded, “That will be grrr-ific!”) We enjoyed playing Scrabble together. It was my girls’ first time playing the “real” version. I think they still prefer the Disney Junior Edition, but they were able to manage ok. The game went on a little longer than their attention spans though!

Everyone was excited about brownie sundaes with GG’s famous chocolate sauce. And my toddler loved getting to terrorize the cat, as usual. He also enjoyed playing with her stash of Cars cars.

Back-to-School Social

One thing I love about my kids’ school is that they are really intentional about helping new families get integrated into the class. And that means parties! On Sunday, we had a party for my middle daughter’s class that included pony rides, a professional photographer, and a classic awkward introduction circle. I hope all our new friends feel as welcome as we did when we were new last year!

My daughter absolutely lit up when she had her turn on the pony. I definitely went through a horse girl phase as a kid, and I wonder if she’s about to enter hers! I might have to strategically leave a Saddle Club book lying around to find out.

Small Group Dinner

We went straight from the party to our small group dinner, where I found my toddler gleefully “helping” to make icing for a cookie cake. He chose s heart design, probably to maximize icing coverage. We were missing a few of our group members, which meant we had a few deviled eggs left over! (We’ll call it a consolation prize, not a fair trade.) The toddler loved getting to play basketball with the big kids—he probably needs more outside time now that it’s not so hot!

Reading Recap

I did say that I was considering not being a completionist with The Inheritance Games series after book 2. But on my last library run, the next two books were just sitting there, waiting for me. I gave the third book in the series, The Final Gambit, a read this week, and it was just as fun (and over-the-top) as the first two. This family really has their secrets—and inability to communicate directly. But of course, where would the story be without (metaphorical?) skeletons in the closet and puzzles to solve? Still not great literature. Still a good time.

How was your weekend? Read anything fun lately? Let me know in the comments—I love hearing from you!
