Weekend Fun Recap: July 18–20

Weekend Fun Recap: July 18–20

How was your weekend? I feel like we hit the ground running after getting back from Disney. I appreciated a slower weekend to try to regroup and recharge—though the reason it turned out to be slow was a bummer. We still tried to fill it with pockets of fun where possible though!

Frozen: The Musical

My oldest daughter did a week of musical theater camp at our local rec center. She was of course hoping to be Elsa but landed the part of Olaf instead. My husband, parents, and I got to attend her performance on Friday. We’re always impressed by what they can pull off in just a week! She did a great job and made a delightful Olaf.

Cold Stone

My husband had suggested we get ice cream after the play, but work interfered. He picked up Cold Stone after dinner instead. The kids chose pink lemonade sorbet and strawberry ice cream, both with gummy bears mixed in. This sounded horrifying to me. My husband responded with “Why are you surprised when kids act like kids?” Hopefully Cold Stone has seen that combo before! (As an Enneagram One I’m secretly afraid this is against the rules.) I was quite happy with my Dough-lightful Peanut Butter. It made up for not getting ice cream at Disney.

Return of the Family Movie Night

We were planning to just load the kids up with sugar and then send them to bed. But the toddler started insisting that he needed to go to bed because we were going to watch a movie. (As a reminder, he thinks Star Wars movies are scary). The girls have been eager to continue the Star Wars saga. So we decided to embrace an easy toddler bedtime in exchange for a movie night with the big kids. We watched the first half of The Return of the Jedi, and they were so engaged and curious I finally had to say “only questions about what’s already happened” after many repetitions of “watch and see!” (This Little Golden Book isn’t part of our collection.)

My oldest kid was falling asleep by 8:30, which is unusual for her. Dad helped her get to bed, and by the time I’d peeled myself off the couch and mixed up some bread dough, she was completely out. Saturday morning she asked me to take her temperature, and sure enough she had a low-grade fever. This was such a bummer because one of her best friends from school had her birthday party Saturday afternoon. She had really been looking forward to seeing her school friends, and I’d been so relieved that the party didn’t fall during our Disney trip. But the combo of Disney immediately followed by camp turned out to be too much this time. We’ll try to get a treat with her friend another time to make it up to both of them!

Famer’s Market

We had to pivot our weekend plans, and I suddenly had a free morning in which to entertain the toddler. I took him back to our city’s farmer’s market. He was sad that the fiyah twuck wasn’t in attendance like it was last time, but he enjoyed walking around and seeing the vendors. I ran into a neighbor I’d never officially met and got to chat with her a little bit. We also picked up some fresh corn and peaches to enjoy this weekend.

Flour Power

We have a reward system in place for our big kids, and one reward option is a special outing with Mom or Dad. A couple years ago, my husband signed my middle kid and me up for a Flour Power cooking class as a Mother’s Day gift. She wanted a repeat of this experience as a reward, and I was able to find the same Christmas in July class for us to take. As an Enneagram One, I find the experience of cooking with few tools and imprecise measurements frustrating, to say the least. But my kid had fun, and I enjoyed spending time with her!

Reading Recap

We took Sunday easy since my big kid was still sick, but it gave me time to set up my time budget for next week and finish my book. I picked the one book from my list that was readily available from my library: The Fellowship of Puzzlemakers by Samuel Burr.

The story switches back and forth between two timelines (it’s not confusing) as Clayton, who was raised by Pippa Allsbrook and her puzzle-loving friends, follows the clues Pippa left for him regarding his parentage after her passing. We also travel back to Pippa forming the Fellowship and shepherding it into a commune of eccentric but loveable characters. I enjoyed Pippa’s story more than Clayton’s, and readers may want to do their own research about the romantic elements in the book before diving in. But overall I enjoyed getting to know the members of the Fellowship. (And don’t worry—you don’t need any puzzle-solving abilities!)

How was your weekend? Anyone else fighting off summer germs? What’s the best book you’ve read lately? Let me know in the comments—I love hearing from you!
