Weekend Fun Recap: July 25–27

Weekend Fun Recap: July 25–27

How was your weekend? I’m not in college anymore, so it does seem like quite the stretch to call Thursday evening part of the weekend. But we did finish up Return of the Jedi with the kids on Thursday. They, predictably, loved the Ewoks. (Do we need this Ewok Loungefly for our next Disney trip? Possibly.)

Now we have to brace ourselves for the introduction of Jar Jar Binks and the meesa talkin like thissa I know will follow. But I’m choosing fun! I said yes to finishing a movie instead of my to do list on a THURSDAY NIGHT! I can do this! In fact, I’m choosing fun so much that I think it’s time for a summer fun list check-in.

Summer Fun List

As of our last check-in, my girls just had one item each left: a SkyZone trip and a game day. We have not done either of those. We do have a couple more weeks before school starts. And we also have girls who can be just a little pedantic, so we might say that we have until September 21 to finish. It will certainly be hot here until then!

I’ve made a little more progress! We did indeed go on vacation. I got through several summer magazines. I’m trucking along on my Capeside Victorian puzzle. And I started my LEGO French Café! I’ve finished two of eight bags so far. The first bag was a little tedious, but it was fun to see the sidewalk come together in a really unique way. I got more ice cream last weekend via our Cold Stone celebration but still haven’t gotten to try the new Alec’s flavor. Maybe I’ll make it a quest once the kids are back in school!

Family Game Night

Since we finished the movie on Thursday, we were able to get back on track with our Friday family game night. It was middle kid’s week to pick (thank goodness for these recaps to keep us on track). She wanted a repeat of Muppet Clue. She went out early after a bad guess but was a good sport about sticking around to reveal her cards as needed. I won and got to clean up.

Library + Park

I have probably created a monster, but there is a cute little park on the way home from our local library. The last couple of times I’ve taken the toddler to the library, we’ve stopped at the park on the way home. He will probably think we do that every time now. But hey, I’m learning to have fun! Maybe it’s not a terrible thing. Last time we went, it was so brutally hot that even he was ready to go after a short time. This time, there was a breeze to take the edge off, and he enjoyed swinging until it was time to go.

At the library, I scored one of the books I’ve been looking forward to and got a new haul of read-alouds (alas, none from my favorites list). But maybe How Do Dinosaurs Show Good Manners? will have some helpful lessons.

Date Night

My husband and I enjoyed a much-needed date night after lots of Disney together-with-the-kids time. My awesome sister-in-law hung out with our crew while we went out to one of our favorite local restaurants. I’ve settled on a “decide once” dinner for the kids when we go out—Trader Joe’s mac and cheese plus whatever fruit and veggies we have on hand. It’s not the world’s healthiest, but it’s cheap, easy, and exciting enough that they look forward to it.

This time, we had blueberries on hand that we picked with some friends earlier this week (fun!). We were so excited last year to discover this hidden gem. Ms. Ruth has lived in her home here since 1966 and has a beautiful garden and rows and rows of blueberry bushes (pictured above). You can pick your own blueberries as long as you stay out of her garden! My toddler quickly discovered the joy of her “Eat as many as you want!” policy and left with an empty bucket. My girls picked a pound and a half that made it home, and we enjoyed them all week.

Small Group

We were able to host our small group at our house for our semi-regular Sunday afternoon meeting. My cake-making friend said that she was bringing a treat, but it was not cake. It turned out to be a dessert board featuring cookies, brownies, Oreos, fruit, and these delicious Dark Chocolate Pomegranate bites. There was of course frosting to dip said treats in. Oh, and figs covered in goat cheese and wrapped in prosciutto. She doesn’t do anything halfway. It was, as always, good to be together—treats or no treats!

Reading Recap

I got The Hawthorne Legacy, the sequel to The Inheritance Games, on my last library run. This was on my list of books I’ve been looking forward to reading, and it was just as good of a time as the first one. I saw some of the twists coming but not all of them. There are currently six books in the series, but this one wrapped up pretty neatly. I may or may not keep going—I do enjoy the characters, but more drama might just be over the top.

How was your weekend? Does summer end when the calendar says it ends or when school starts? Do you ever wait until your kids are back in school to buy the good ice cream? Let me know in the comments—I love hearing from you!
