Weekend Fun Recap: June 13–15
How was your weekend? I hope you were able to celebrate the dads in your life and have your own weekend fun too! We had a lot to celebrate this weekend, and I also got to attend my new favorite type of party! Keep reading to find out why I now wonder if I’m part Icelandic.
Family Game Night

My oldest kid chose The Game of LIFE – Disney Parks Edition for family game night. (It’s hard to find the parks version these days, but this Barbie version looks so fun.) The rules for the Disney version are a little vague, but we still had fun picking up park pals and receiving wishes! There’s not a whole lot of strategy with LIFE (is this a metaphor?). However, it is a really good way to practice some math and money skills. My oldest kid loves to be the banker, and I’m impressed by how quickly she can make change these days!
Sumarbókaflóð

What’s Sumarbókaflóð, you ask? Me too. My friends hosted a summer version of Jólabókaflóðið, or the Icelandic Christmas book flood, which is pretty much what it sounds like. Guests at the summer version were invited to bring a book to exchange (wrapped in paper with a brief description) and a book to read quietly. We snacked on scones, swapped books, and enjoyed some time to read in the sunshine. It was an absolutely lovely way to spend a Saturday morning and the highlight of my weekend fun.
As my contribution, I brought a nonfiction book about plants that is WAY more interesting than it sounds. I went home with The Gift of Limitations, which sounds like it will be an excellent, if challenging, read for this Enneagram One! I was sad to get this book stolen in our exchange—my friend’s daughter (of kid birthday party fame) contributed it and is apparently now old enough to have really fun and interesting taste in books!
As an added bonus, I had my first LimonCello La Croix, and it is top-notch. I already bought myself a 12 pack to stock the pool bag with!
Father’s Day, Round 1

We got to do a combination celebration of my mom’s birthday, my husband’s birthday, and Father’s Day on Saturday night. We kept it simple with pizza, a few rounds of Just One, and dessert. My mom made a fabulous fruit tart and a peanut butter pie. I foolishly let my big kids have a little of each (mostly because I wanted a little of each), so they had LOTS of energy before bed. My toddler stayed mostly entertained thanks to my brother’s old Hot Wheels collection. We set him up with one big ramp and a huge bag of cars. He will race them until the cars are gone, and it gives us a little breathing room!
Father’s Day, Round 2
As with Mother’s Day, we kept things fairly simple. I did go with Muppets Clue for a gift, along with some Goofy Movie–themed socks and a t-shirt in anticipation of our upcoming Disney trip. I was volunteering at church for much of the morning, but I picked up some Publix subs for lunch and kept the kids under control while he watched baseball.
He also wanted to spend the evening reading and relaxing with a show that isn’t my favorite. So since I had finished everything on my time budget for the week, I had a little free time. I wanted to do something fun, but I also knew that this coming week is very full. (I’m overbudget in my plan, so I already know some things aren’t going to happen!) My budget has some extra fun things in it—book club, brunch, and a day trip—so I thought about working ahead on some responsibilities. But I decided that I could still use the found time for fun! I went ahead and watched my episode of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which let me move an hour out of my budget for the coming week. It wasn’t Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Monday, but that’s ok! I finished up season one with a “good riddance” to Joel. Am I the only one who just does not see the appeal?
Reading Recap

Ok, y’all, I have got to get back on track with my library holds. Amy and Isabelle was another panic grab during a library trip with the toddler. I’m late to the Elizabeth Strout party, but I recently read and loved Olive Kitteridge, so I picked up this one. I know many of Strout’s characters share a universe, and I didn’t want to read out of order. Amy and Isabelle is Strout’s debut, and it was intense. Content warnings abound, but Strout is a stunning writer. The heartbreak and healing of her characters leap off the page. Proceed with caution with this one, but someone give Strout a Pulitzer (oh wait).
What did you do for weekend fun? What should I put on my library holds list? Let me know in the comments!
